Stuck in the cycle

I remember one summer when I was still living in Fort McMurray…I think I was 15 or so. The provincial championships for softball were being held in Fort Mac that summer, and I really wanted to play. So, I tried out for the rep team; I put all my heart and effort in to those tryouts, but I didn’t make it because I didn’t have enough experiences playing at that higher level. I remember being angry because how was someone supposed to get experience if you didn’t let them play? Anyway, as the host city, we were allowed two teams in the tournament. The Rep “B” team lost every game, but we had a hell of a lot of fun.

The working world isn’t much different when it comes to “you don’t have the experience, so you can’t have the job” mentality. You really want to do something, be in a certain role, but you don’t get it, no matter how much passion you have for it, because you don’t have enough experience in a certain aspect of the role. I’ve learned that volunteering is a great solution to getting that experience, but it’s tough to volunteer to do something outside of your comfort zone or if you don’t have a lot of experience doing it. I’m a perfect example – I am a volunteer blog writer for IABC Calgary, but is that outside my comfort zone? Clearly not, since I’m writing a blog post right now. The worst part? We have great opportunities come up from our blog editor to do great assignments for the IABC chapter blog (with the potential to be published in other IABC publications), and I’m afraid to take them because I don’t think I’ll be good enough.

It’s a vicious cycle apparently. What’s that saying about the bull and his horns?…
